Chapter Twenty-One

A little later, Jager and Djuna arrived to drop off a box of catalogues they’d printed for Archibald the zombie antiques dealer. He was running an auction here this evening as part of the midsummer fun, and he’d asked Jager and Djuna to bring the catalogues to Locksleigh this afternoon so, when people arrived later, they could have a sneak preview of what he was going to be auctioning.

I was busy putting out seats for the play, so Jager and Djuna gave me a hand, whilst Luke and Leia agreed to set up the auction area. But from here it looked distinctly like they were sitting on the grass, flicking through Archibald’s catalogue instead.

Ah well, at least they were getting along well. Maybe Luke might pluck up the courage to ask her out on a date. Maybe Leia would pluck up the courage to kiss him...

Apparently, the play was always performed in this little secluded area around the back of the manor house, just in front of the shrubbery. There was no actual stage, but instead the players performed on the grass. The seating was very professional though. There were about two hundred chairs to put out in a sloping structure that had been delivered here earlier. The structure even had a huge canvas roof covering it so, if the heavens opened, the audience would remain nice and dry. The actors, however, would get well and truly soaked. Luckily, it looked as if the inevitable rain wasn’t due until tomorrow.

It was deliciously peaceful here at the moment, but the midsummer revellers would be arriving at around six o’clock with their picnics, which they would eat on the browning grass, surrounded by the stunning trees on these lush grounds. Then the play would happen. And afterwards the frivolities would apparently continue into the early hours, on the dance area in front of the manor house. The musicians were to be situated in the minstrel gallery at the front of the Tudor wing. It would be like being transported back in time.

I was extremely impressed with how easy it’d been to organise. Leia had kept all Marilyn’s notes – and obviously I could just ask Marilyn herself any questions via my magic mirror. It was all coming nicely together now. Leia had done such a great job of decorating the trellises with her sweet-pea and marigold garlands, creating a vibrant wall of bright colours and summertime smells. We just needed to finish these chairs, and we should be almost done.

“It’s looking good, Evelyn,” Djuna said, as we stood back to admire our hard work.

I poured us all a cooling iced-tea, and Djuna started taking photos for the newspaper, whilst Jager jotted down notes.

Djuna took a photo of Leia’s flower garlands. “I’m so glad the play’s still going ahead tonight. Despite the, you know...”

“Brutal murder of star cast member,” Jager said, writing this line down as he spoke.

“Alex has offered to step in as Puck,” I said, sipping my drink. “He played him at school apparently.
